The Challenge

As part of the application process for Tesla's Instructional Design role on their engineering team, I was asked to build a 4-7 minute course covering the Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in 1 week. Additionally, there needed to be a section about the Tesla Superchargers and a 5-question assessment.

The project also needed an outline, a script (with self-recorded VO), and a storyboard to go along with development.

The Solution

Since it wasn't directly specified, I started by determining my audience. I decided that my course would be geared toward potential buyers as a sales pitch. I aimed to keep the information simple and to-the-point, while addressing the main concerns of buying an EV. As someone who is looking to buy a hybrid vehicle in the near future, it was easy for me to empathize with my intended audience.

I was also intentional about the assessment at the end. I originally wanted questions spaced throughout the project, but I put them at the end for the sake of review by the hiring team. More importantly, I made the assessment have unlimited attempts with no passing score and skippable after the first attempt. The best way to turn off a voluntary learner is to make them take a high-stakes assessment with no incentive for passing. Lastly, I varied the types of questions to best represent the content and to showcase the question options that Storyline can offer.

I struggled a little bit with the branding and visual style choices. I was not given any specific guidelines so I grabbed fonts/colors/logos from analyzing the Tesla website and other Tesla documents. Looking back, I should've aimed for a more sleek/modern  black-and-white style, but I ended up leaning into the Tesla Red with black accents. I also leaned heavily on light shadows to give a bit of depth from the background.

The Results

The result was a product that I am ultimately happy about. There are definitely things I would go back and change or add if I had the time, including sections highlighting interior features of the car using layers and hotspots, as well as giving a more modern visual style.

The product was good enough to secure my a spot in the next round of interviews, which was my benchmark for success!
